Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw is a Taiwanese singer who is from an ancient Aboriginal tribe. ”My name is Sangpuy, my grandpa was named Sangpuy, and so was my grandpa’s grandpa. The name ‘Sangpuy’ has been passed down to me from generations ago, and my offsprings will also carry this name.” Every Sangpuy had his own role and responsibility in his society; For this generation’s Sangpuy, it is his duty to let the world hear the wisdom of the Taiwanese aborigines’ music and culture.
After the 921 earthquake in 1999, Sangpuy toured around with Taiwan Aboriginal World Music Workshop (http://www.abomusic.org.tw), and his music encouraged many aboriginals to stand back on their feet. Since then, Sangpuy continued recording and performing around the world with other aboriginal musicians. His efforts and involvement in aboriginal music reinforced his true calling in promoting aboriginal music.
Sangpuy has been not only creating aboriginal music, but his contributions also include cultivating the next generation of Taiwanese Aboriginal music talents. He hopes that these wonderful sounds will be celebrated by folks all over the world.
