TEDxTaipei was founded five years ago when the first TEDx talk was introduced in Taiwan. Back then, our vision was to build a social platform where great stories and ideas may be easily shared among young adults in Taiwan. Since our initial talk, we have hosted four annual events and over 100 salon-style gatherings and campus talks. These series of events allow us to compile a comprehensive knowledge database that focuses on Taiwan, innovation, and creativity.
Storytelling, the traditional method of passing down customs, history, and heritage to a younger generation, is the core value of TEDxTaipei. The TEDx way of contemporary storytelling consists of talks and performances that stir one’s curiosity. These stories are made available not only to those in the audience seats, but are also broadcasted online for free. Ultimately, we hope that these TEDxTalks serve as a multifaceted medium for children to learn about Taiwan and the rest of the world.
Organizing a program like TEDxTaipei is no easy task. Aside from a supportive social community to rally with us, we here at TEDxTaipei must also demonstrate the same level of passion and dedication to drive TEDxTaipei initiatives. I wholeheartedly believe that our commitment in spreading good ideas will bring more like-minded individuals to join this movement. For me, I’m very fortunate to be working with a TEDxTaipei team who also shares the same passion and beliefs as I do about our work.
Since the first TEDxTaipei event — “The Stories of Taiwan” debuted in 2009, TEDxTaipei has since curated “Creative Trilogy: Unlearn, Play, Inspire” in 2010, “Big Hopes for the Next Ten Years” in 2011, and “The Future is Now” in 2012. Our team has also reached out to campuses by hosting salon-style gatherings to encourage students to spread ideas. Over 100 talks have been conducted in just three year’s time. These inspiring stories serve as the foundation for documenting unique voices of Taiwan.
Our initial objective for creating TEDxTaipei was to see more local stories and voices of Taiwan be heard around the world. We envisioned our future leaders — young adults and children — gain a new perspective of Taiwan and the world through the TEDx lenses. In four year’s time, we saw these dreams realized through the organization of other TEDx communities in Taiwan. We want to thank everyone for their participation and their commitment in making TEDx happen.
This year, we pose a new question to the folks in Taiwan. What are the key messages or issues that help define this era? What are the mental images we want to communicate to the world? Keep in mind that the decisions and voices we deliver now will impact the mindsets of our future leaders.
Please accompany us in our journey to reinvigorate the education system and to promote the spreading of ideas.
We thank you once again for your generous support of TEDxTaipei.
